Before coming up with the current appearance and mode of functioning of the cybryonts, we went through different phases of experimentation. Here are some of them.
The windmill
We experimented with different forms of renewable energy. The idea was to make our project as self-sustaining as we could. We wanted to minimise the total embedded energy of the sculptures. We eventually ran into different technical issues in trying to have a fully functional windmill at all times and through all types of weather.
Microbial fuel cells
The idea behind MFCs was to integrate moss into the anode of the microbial fuel cell. The mosses photosynthesize and produce organic matter which microbial communities in the soil break down. These microbes then release electrons as they metabolize the organic compounds, which the MFC captures and channels to generate power.
